In that northern land, vast immensity of iceways and moose-y beasts and other thoughts of impending nightmares of oilsands is… wait for it, wait for it: Edmonton’s vibrant indie music scene! The weather may be freezing, but this hotbed of musical creativity has gained a stronger and stronger reputation in the country. Now with bands playing at SXSW and touring North America, Edmonton’s sons and daughters are getting more cred than ever. Thanks to Ryan Chilibeckand his crew at the HI-Edmonton for this short-list of the best live shows you can catch in a city that’s more than a giant mall (although that’s a pretty wild place too..)

The Wet Secrets - Just another example that good things do happen when you get drunk.
It all started with a racy (staged) photograph snapped in dim light back in 2005, under the dankest of circumstances. Half-hearted promises to form a band were soon forgotten due to epic alcohol consumption, but would rear back like an angry stallion months later when it became apparent that The Wet Secrets might not be a bad idea after all.

Christian Hansen & the Autistics - best live show in Edmonton right now…hands down. Bring your dance shoes and prepare to get sweaty.
Christian Hansen & the Autistics! were formed in the Fall of 2007 in Edmonton Alberta Canada. After playing many local shows, doing a Canadian tour, rocking the CBC and playing New Music West, they wanted to dance. So, they destroyed their acoustic guitars, and drum kits, did the Wild Rose cleanse, watched the Breakfast Club and wrote a bunch of new songs designed to make people move.
Hot Panda – The drummer of this band is a girl who used to work at the front desk at HI-Edmonton!
“So, what should we sound like?”. The result is a swath of tunes that sound like anything and everything. Brit pop, gypsy swing, opera solos, Robert Pollard style lo-fi jangles, glammy Roxy Music keyboards, and “melodies that will be impossible to dislodge from your temporal cortex” (ChartAttack), all find their home in the music of Hot Panda… sometimes all in the same song!
